In a crucial parliamentary intervention today, MP Shri Gaurav Gogoi raised serious concerns regarding China’s plan to build the world’s largest hydropower dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet. The MP emphasized the project’s profound implications for India’s national security, water security, and regional stability, calling for immediate government action. Shri Gogoi highlighted that he has already raised concerns about China’s disproportionate control over the Brahmaputra’s water resources with both the Minister of Defence and the Minister of External Affairs. He underlined the risk of China potentially manipulating the water supply, which could lead to catastrophic floods or devastating droughts in India’s northeastern states. Given the sensitive geopolitical environment, the MP stressed the need for India to be fully prepared for any scenario, urging the government to pursue an agreement ensuring the sharing of critical hydrological data with China, especially for flood forecasting and management. The MP concluded by reaffirming the urgency of this issue, urging the government to act swiftly to protect India’s interests and regional stability.
